What is the best way to start a all vegan diet? Cause I'm going to swich to this diet this summer, and how can i conquer not just stopping this diet when i see all my friends eating a Big Mac?What is the best way to start a all vegan diet?
I'm not a vegan, but I have a few friends that are. Your first task is to get rid of your meat products. Well, actually your first task is to start reading labels and to know what's in the products you buy that you didn't know used animal byproducts in them. You'd be surprised at how much of what we have uses some animal products.
Why don't you get a book on Vegan diets or going vegan (or a website) or join a group to find out what you need to know. One thing you do need to know is that B12 is one of the hardest (if not impossible) vitamins to get from non-animal sources. Be sure you are getting enough, along with the rest of your vitamins and minerals. Talk to someone at your local health food store if you're unsure.
How do you deal with the friends eating Big Macs? Don't judge. You'll lose friends that way. How to deal with the temptation? I'm assuming you're doing this for some good reasons. Just remind yourself of your reasons. Also, if you aren't a meat eater, I'm told the smell of meat cooking stops being pleasant or enticing and starts smelling a bit like burning a carcass. You may not want to join your friends at McDonald's anymore. And that's okay. If they're really your friends, they'll respect you for taking a stand and sticking to it.What is the best way to start a all vegan diet?
Ease into it gradually. Start limiting the amount of meats, and dairy products, and try substituting vegan products in their place. It won't be easy at first. Some of the Vegan substitutes for meats and cheese may taste awful. And some will. Try to find the best and tastiest products available. Another way to cut the off taste is the use of herbs and spices to rev up their blandness. Look to Vegan websites for recipe sources. When they eat a Big Mac, have a salad or fries, but remember, most cream based dressing may have animal by products in them, so stick to simple oil and vinegar.
GO with your friends to a salad bar, or buy bagels, bananas, peanut butter and tofutti's and go to the park instead.
If your friends ONLY every go to McDo's you could use a change anyway, all of you.
Start with a picnic.
Pita bread
hummous
soy yoghurt
tofu ebabs
veg curry with garlic naan
pineapple rice and cashews
chips-
salsa
avocado and cucumber sushi
granola bars with brown sugar
chickpea, sweetcorn and pasta salad with soy dressing.
Spaghetti prima vera- vegetable and toamto spaghetti.
Coconut dhal with paratha ( indian flatbread)
almond butter bars with dark chocolate chips.
Just go crazy over good food- even the cheapest stuff- chickpeas, fava beans, pinto beans, split peas, humous, pita bread, vegan cheese- is better and cheaper than fatty fast food which barely even fills you up.What is the best way to start a all vegan diet?
If you want it to be a permanent change you have to take it slow. I am a vegan and will never go back to dairy and eggs ever again because I made the change gradual. Here is what I did and recommend for you:
Become pescatarian for 2 weeks
Quit fish and become a real vegetarian who still eats dairy, eggs, and honey for at least a year. (i did it for over 2)
Quit all animal products one day and become a dietary vegan for a few months.
Learn which beauty products, soaps, and household products are tested on animals or contain animal-by products and switch to the vegan products.
Continue to avoid animal products to the best of your abilities and you're a true vegan.
Meat craving cure: Have a raw fruit and a tall glass of water.
Dairy craving cure: Daiya vegan cheese.
Goodluck!...
The best way is to start by just being a vegetarian. It is much more likely that you will stick with it by making small changes in your diet. Almost every restaurant, even fast food places have salads on the menu, also you can choose from side dishes like fries, fruit, stuffed jalapenos, ect. By starting as a vegetarian, you eat products that come fron animals but the animals was not hurt, like dairy (cheese, milk, ice cream), eggs, and honey. Try it for a little bit, then gradually cut those items out of your diet. What is the best way to start a all vegan diet?
Krystal,
For meat replacements Check out for morning start products: http://www.morningstarfarms.com/products_vegan-meals-appetizers-entrees.aspx

and for cheese replacements , check: http://www.daiyafoods.com/
Once you get comfortable in this, you can try recipies elsewhere
( E.g. http://www.peta.org/living/vegetarian-living/recipes/default.aspx )
Also , chek out for egetarian and vegan restaurants around. Most Indian restaurants have a lot of options for vegetarians. There is a vegan only restaurant called "loving hut"
All these brands are either available at the local supermarket or at the health store. They are fortified with all the vitamins and minerals that you would find in animal products. Also, try to change it gradually over a period of time rather than suddenly ( perhaps just breakfast or lunch for a while) . I also suggest that you consider taking a some vitamin supplements (particularly B12) and they are cheap.
Good luck!
Jude
Simple. Look up what's in most meat products (hamburgers, hotdogs...) and you'll lose your appetite for it.
