How dangerous is a vegan diet?

I was flabbergasted when I read this article online revealing some known truths about the dangers associated with a vegan diet. This article is living proof that you need animal products in your diet to be healthy. How dangerous is a vegan diet?
Ah, an new incarnation -- I see they did get you into the anti-vegan witness protection program after all! That's such a weight off my mind.

I was so worried that all those mean, nasty vegetarians and vegans that're constantly harrassing you might have finally done you in. Suffocation by tofu is not a pretty death, and I'd hate to lose you and all your hilarious questions here at Yahoo Answers.

Oh, and I'm not surprised that you're flabbergasted by that article. I found its biased attitude and questionable "science" pretty flabbergasting, too.How dangerous is a vegan diet?
A vegan diet is very healthy...and only 2% of vegans are obese. But vegetarians are missing vital minerals that they need but also can be solved by taking vitamins or supplements.
I am 57 and my mother is a healthy 80 year old, enjoying the company of 21 grandchildren. Every member of our extended family is vegetarian.

Some people like you try to scare others for no reason.

This article contains someones views [not facts] on vegan diet.

You are entitled to your views %26amp; we are to ours.

Views held by vegans are formed through personal experience.

These are more valuable than of those selling meat.

American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada says

"Vegetarian diets offer a number of nutritional benefits, including lower levels of saturated fat, cholesterol, and animal protein as well as higher levels of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate, and antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and phytochemicals. Vegetarians have been reported to have lower body mass indices than non-vegetarians, as well as lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; vegetarians also show lower blood cholesterol levels; lower blood pressure; and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer."How dangerous is a vegan diet?
I am a very healthy vegan and i do not eat any animal products i also stay a healthy weigh and am full of energy i also have 6 children aged 6 and under to run round after so as a mum i do not find that i am ill as you stated i am up at 6am with the kids and also up feeding my baby though the night and getting up with my other kids so i only get a few hours sleep a night and i walk about 12 miles a day with the school run and still have to cook and clean,

your site is the first site i have ever seen that states that a vegan diet is bad for you and i have been on most of them.
Go and read a copy of 'The absolutely Animal free cookbook' by Wendy Turner. It would do you more good. Well, well different picture , different profile , same old king of the thumbs down!!!! BTW on this new pic you look like the son of Frank Carson and Judith Chalmers!!!How dangerous is a vegan diet?
This article seems mostly anecdotal. Alot of use of the words "i believe" and "as I understand" and references to "testimonials" and "correspondence." None of this is hard fact. I don't see any hard science in the whole article save one statistic regarding B12 from another doctor's study which is paraphrased, maybe correctly, maybe not. Also, this seems to all attack a specific type of vegan diet, not all diets.

Please feel free to eat meat if you feel so strongly about it, but let the rest of us make our own health decisions.
Do you think these people are unhealthy?

Since you're very obviously not a vegetarian or a vegan, why do you spend so much of your time posting on the vegetarian Q%26amp;A; trying to tell us how wrong you think we all are. Our diet is a decision we've all made by ourselves and we're hardly likely to be swayed from it by reading your repetetive inputs. Isn't there somebody else you could go and play with?
Most practising Buddhists are vegan and they seem to do OK. The article proves absolutely nothing and in fact makes no claims to prove anything. Of course, some people who are Vegan but do not have enough knowledge to create a great diet may have health problems just as many people who are not vegan create health problems for themselves through ignorance. The modern diet packed with refined carbohydrates, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, hydrogenated fats etc etc is way mre harmful than a good vegan diet is every likely to be. Whereas vegetarians and vegans who eat a good diet tend to be healthier than non-Vs. If you are not vegan or vegetarian why is it of interest to you?
my mums been vegan since i born, there is alot of thing you can eat to build you up such as yams, plantain, green banana's, dashsheen, pumkin, cocoa it

so you talking rubbish my mum is 72 and still going strong
nice job trying to promote your own web site...

Im sure its hard to find people who believe that garbage and are dumb enough to buy your book
about as dangerous as a homosexual is to a child or a muslim to our way of life
So you've never had junk food or alcohol then which I'm guessing would be a lot worst?

If someone wants to be a veggie then let them be one. If I want 15 pints of beer tonight then I'll have them.
I'm puzzled as to what your actual question is. You seem to have already answered it, but I'll take a shot. Human beings have many variations. For some, the simple peanut can be fatal. For others, they don't digest animal protein well. We're fortunate to live in a time and place where different diets can be shared and taught. Personally I found the vegan diet too high in carbs and began to put on weight and then became a type 2 diabetic. I adopted a high protein low carb diet and got rid of the diabetes, although it would return if I ate carbs in great amounts.

But for other people, vegan is tons healthier than McDonald's.

One should always consider why such an article gets printed. It may be as simple as the cattle ranchers association paid for it to get printed to ensure their product gets used.
well after i became vegan, i feel much better. I lost gain, I have more energy and i workout realy hard like marshal art and tae bo because of carbs(good carbs) and actually i am not cold like before. I feel like i have a new life . I am not losing my hair and nails. I don't feel any problem at all. so this article is all about advertise for meat
Why report Kitkat, she was only telling it correctly. providing you take SUPPLEMENTS then a vegan diet can be very healthy, but there are some vitamins etc that we normally get from meat that need to be taken as supplements. Any diet, taken to extremes can be unheallthy unless the corret supplements are taken. However the human race is deisgned for an omnivourous diet.
Who is "Chet Day", president of the Meat Eaters Association? It's one person's opinion and as other posters have said, there's not a shred of hard fact in his article. I refer you to the American Dietetic Association's website and their position on vegetarian and vegan diets:

"Appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutrionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases."

"Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence."

I could go on, but just take a few minutes to read the abstract in the link below.
That's one opinion and one article. I have seen dozens of articles that say if done properly, a vegan diet is very healthy but supplements are needed.

Most American's have dangerous diets..why do you think there are so many obese people with heart problems and diabetes? A junk food diet is far more dangerous.
Must be really bad!

I think I'm seeing double (and I feel sick)

Oh, no. There's only one of you after all.....

.
The vegan diet does not provide enough protein or vit b12 and sometimes lacks essential fats!

Most vegans i've seen have little muscle tissue dry hair and generally look very frail and weak!
The fact is that we should not take up a particular diet like some people take up veg diet , but some non-veg diet . You should eat both vegetarian food as well as non veg, our body needs both vegetable as well as meat. both are healthy
I find your "questions" truly funny...do you really think that the well informed vegetarians and vegans need you to tell them what to eat? Most of them have researched more into nutition and know more about it then you ever will. I suggest you look at the real facts, or better still go and eat your meat and leave the rest of us alone.
There is lots of contraverises about vegeterian diets, but the fact is that people hwo eat vegetables live longer. it is important to eat a balanced diet
I personally can not see how a vegan diet can be better than a diet that contains lean meat and low fat dairy products
I've seen that article, and I have to say it isn't the only one out there.

Google's such a wonderful thing.
That information is inaccurate to say. It is based on his opinion. I visited my aunt and she is a vegan. She strictly follows her vegan diet. She doesn't use any animal products whatsoever. She does not eat bread or dairy products or meat. It was hard for me because I liked dairy but it was impossible to find anything at else that was composed of that. For that weekends I was a very strict vegan. It was quite interesting. Plus she has a toddler who is a vegan who gets all her required vitamins and nutrients in. She and her are perfectly healthy. I am sorry to say that article is probably from the point of view of a dedicated meat lover who looks at vegetarianism and vegan ism as weird because it is not composed of meat. Plus you can be in perfect health being one because we went to the doctor for an annual check up and he said we were perfectly healthy. So a vegan diet is in no way dangerous.
Very..... Man is a carnivore!
I am not a nutritionist (perhaps one will answer), but as a personal trainer and health scientist, I agree with the dangers of a vegan diet. I had a friend who was vegan, and I found it very challenging to go out to eat with him. He essentially couldn't order anything. Also, certain fat soluble vitamins found in fruits and vegetables need fats to be absorbed by the body. In addition, our muscles need protein to rebuild and function.

Great article.
