On television in the past week, Dr. Oz and Ellen have unabashed experts who recommended a total vegan diet (avoiding milk and meat completely).
I've never seen this before on mass media in the USA. Is this a new trend? The research of Dr. T. Colin Campbell has largely been ignored by the media. Is there a new media consciousness about Vegan diet?
I wouldn't say it's a trend. A month ago, Dr. Oz recommended a temporary vegan diet for a cowboy who had advanced arteriosclerosis. But he also recommends such "health foods" as octopus, fish, egg whites, turkey, and yogurt, all of which are hardly vegan.
For some time in the mainstream media, there has been growing acceptance of vegan food options and a greater willingness to criticize meat, but I've never seen outright endorsement of a vegan lifestyle. Unfortunately, most people still consider it extreme.
I see your point though -- at least it's now being mentioned. Five years ago, the word itself would have been taboo. Is there a new media consciousness about Vegan diet?
I don't think it is so much of a trend, I think people are just becoming more aware about the food they eat and the conditions that their food is 'raised' in. That combined with people trying to be more environmentally friendly and aware means that there is more information around. I think we will continue to see vegan awareness grow over the next few years and I really believe that it will become much more socially and culturally acceptable to be a vegan in the future.
