I've read some testimonials that say vegan diets actually make you gain weight? Does anyone have any first hand experience?Do people actually loose weight on a vegan diet?
Some people do; some people don't. Some people even gain weight. Being vegan isn't magic. In fact, it can be quite dangerous if people don't take time to learn how to replace the nutrients they're missing when they give up all animal products.Do people actually loose weight on a vegan diet?
I lost 5 lbs. switching from vegetarian to vegan. Not a lot of weight, but I only needed to lose 5 lbs. I ate entirely too much cheese as a vegetarian and was able to replace it with lower fat foods.
My husband went from omni to vegan most days of the month and has lost 30 lbs on a vegan diet. Note that he's eating more fruits and vegetables and is not on a potato chip and coke vegan diet. He has cut out dairy entirely.Do people actually loose weight on a vegan diet?
I don't see why anyone would gain weight, unless for some reason they begin eating more oils and sweets than they otherwise would have. (I guess it's possible because the lower-calorie diet might make their body rebel and crave fatty foods.) But if you stop eating meat, dairy, etc. and start eating lots of vegetables, you will lose weight. And if you don't want to worry about losing it too quickly, just make sure you fill up those calories with lots of bulkier (but healthy) foods like beans, nuts, whole grains, fruits, etc.
I lost 15 pounds when I first went vegan (to a normal weight), but I gained most of them back when I learned to bake vegan :)Do people actually loose weight on a vegan diet?
Most people lose weight but I gain. I think since it's a lower-fat diet, I don't get full as quickly and end up eating more. And lack of available junk food is no problem if you like to cook and bake for yourself.
Whatever. The vegan diet isn't a silver bullet. You have to watch your portion sizes and make an effort to eat healthily, no matter what your diet.
When you first start you may gain a little weight because your body will go into shock and store any fat it can get its hands on.
But as soon as it adjusts you should lose weight as long as you exercise and don't overeat.
